SUPER SESI used by Philip Morris International to develop smoke-free tobacco alternatives
PMI has decided to bet on a smoke-free future. For this, they have decided to make the required investments in biomedical research and scientific equipment. The goal is to replace cigarettes as soon as possible with smoke-free alternatives.SUPER SESI will help to asses the kinetics of different smoke-free products, and lower the risk of harm caused by smoking.
Super SESI-HRMS: Real-Time Analysis of Dynamic Metabolic Processes
In the last ten years, we have developed the tools required to analyze dynamic changes in metabolism. A key technical challenge was to detect large and biologically relevant molecules in the gas phase, which allowed for the analysis of respiration metabolites. This article describes and illustrates this new window into the metabolism and the volatilome. With an exclusive look at high ionization efficiency of Secondary Electro-Spray Ionization (SESI) and Super SESI application.
Real-Time Therapeutic Monitoring of Valproic Acid in Exhaled Breath, presented at the MSACL congress
Post-doctoral researcher Kapil Dev Singh (UKBB) presented part of his studies on therapeutic drug monitoring at the MSACL congress. They measured exhaled breath in pediatric patients treated with antiepileptic medication, and compared it with Gold Standard blood test. They identified secondary metabolites of valproic acid (VPA), and were able to predict the serum concentration of total and free VPA in real time in a non-invasive way, using the platform SUPER SESI - Orbitrap.
Multy center study to diagnose neck cancer with Super SESI
We just installed a second Super SESI at the National Cancer Research Institute of Italy to initiate the first multicenter study based on this technology to diagnose neck cancer with breath analysis.
Due to its proximity to the upper airways, breath analysis is an ideal non-invasive diagnostic approach to detect this disease at an early stage. We are committed to serving scientists and proud to contribute to the improvement of the health of so many people.
IABR - Breath Summit 2019 started
First day at the Breath Summit (Loughborough, UK)! Honored for sharing this time with the Breath Research community. Do not miss Guillermo Vidal's talk on Monday at 16:35h. He will talk about Real-time breath analysis with SESI-HRMS and standardization.
First Super SESI in the USA successfully installed at Ohio State University
Prof. Jiangjiang Zhu and colleagues develop metabolomics techniques based on Super SESI-Orbitrap to study lung and colorectal cancer, intestinal bacteria and their influence on cancer.
ETH researchers double their investment in Super SESI
We have recently installed a new Super SESI and a new Exhalion, that will work in tandem with a Thermo QExactive Plus. This investment validates the technology.
With this acquisition, ETH Zurich (Switzerland) consolidates its position as a top research institution, leading the field of breath research.

Jinan University (Guangzhou, China) pioneers the use of Super SESI in China
We are proud that Jinan University is now using SUPER SESI for breath analysis and environmental analysis.
We hope this new Super SESI Exhalion coupled with the Orbitrap Mass Spectrometer Q Exactive, will allow the IMSAE researchers to focus on their scientific findings, while taking consistency and performance for granted.
Things you didn't know about SESI and ESI (Electro-Spray ionization)
SESI and ESI (Electro-Spary Ionization) have been linked since the initial development of ESI. Fenn and colleagues already noted that gas-phase species in the counterflow gas were also ionized by the spray. Still today, the routine calibration of mass spectral data relies on ubiquitous plasticizes and other contaminants (i.e. polydimethylcyclosiloxanes, phthalates) that are ionized in regular ESI via Secondary Electrospray Ionization mechanisms.
ETH Zurich will be using SUPER SESI for metabolomic studies
The ETH Zurich (Switzerland) has recently completed the acquisition and installation process of a new SUPER SESI unit for a Thermo Fisher Scientific Orbitrap mass spectrometer, that will help in different fields of the research conducted at this institution related to metabolomic studies.
The relevant role of humidity in Secondary Electrospray Ionization (SESI)
Rising the humidity level of the gas introduced through the sample line accelerates the charge transfer reaction rate in Secondary Electrospray Ionization (SESI). It is hypothesized that larger clusters transfer their charge more efficiently than smaller clusters or even bare ions.
THE DIFFICULTY OF DETECTING LOW VOLATILITY SPECIES FOR VOC ANALYSIS TECHNOLOGIES
As you probably already know, current VOC MS analyzers can detect high volatile species, even when they are present in very low concentrations. For instance, in 2009 P. Spanel and D. Smith measured the concentration of ammonia, acetone, methanol, ethanol, and isoprene in human breath using Selected Ion Flow Tube Mass Spectrometry (SIFT-MS) [1] .
Differences between SESI and APCI ambient ionization techniques
In the equilibrium, both Secondary Electro Spray Ionization (SESI) and Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionization (APCI) generate charged water clusters that act as charging agents. What are the differences bewtween these ionization techniques?
CERN's most advanced tools will help Fossiliontech scientists to easily process breath analysis data
The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) has officially reached an agreement with Fossiliontech through a project supported by Ineustar-Pioneers and Promalaga to develop a data processing system tool incorporating CERN algorithms, in order to create a post-processing server that shares the conclusions obtained by all scientists working on breath analysis with SUPER SESI.
